Strengthening Capacities to Promote Industrial Synergies
Within the framework of the Global Eco-Industrial Parks Programme in Peru (PEI Peru), the training session “Basic Concepts of Industrial Synergies” was delivered to officials from Peru’s Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) and industrial park managers.
The session aimed to strengthen the institutional and technical capacities required to identify, promote and implement industrial synergies within industrial parks and productive areas. These practices can improve resource use, reduce costs and create new opportunities for collaboration among companies.
What Are Industrial Synergies?
Industrial synergies occur when two or more companies collaborate to share resources, services, infrastructure, knowledge or by-products.
This type of cooperation can allow materials considered waste by one company to be used as inputs by another. It can also enable the shared use of energy, water, transportation, storage or technical services.
When these relationships become established within an industrial area, they can evolve into industrial symbiosis, one of the key components of the Eco-Industrial Park model.
Tools for Identifying Collaboration Opportunities
During the training, participants were introduced to key concepts, tools and experiences for identifying potential synergies among companies.
Recognizing these opportunities requires analysing material, water and energy flows, as well as the operational needs of companies located within an industrial park.
Potential areas for collaboration include:
- exchange and valorization of by-products;
- shared use of infrastructure;
- joint waste management;
- common transportation and logistics solutions;
- efficient use of water and energy;
- development of shared business services.
These actions can improve the collective performance of an industrial park and strengthen its capacity to respond to environmental, productive and social challenges.
Industrial Synergies and Competitiveness
Industrial synergies generate more than environmental benefits. They can also become a valuable tool for strengthening business competitiveness.
Collaboration among companies can reduce resource consumption, optimize processes and lower costs associated with waste treatment, input procurement and infrastructure use.
It can also support the development of stronger business networks that are able to share knowledge, create joint solutions and adapt more quickly to market changes.
For this reason, industrial symbiosis is considered a strategic element in the transition toward a more efficient, resilient and innovative industry.
A Step Toward a More Sustainable and Inclusive Industry
The implementation of industrial synergies supports the transition toward productive models based on resource efficiency and the circular economy.
These models seek to reduce the environmental impact of industrial activities, extend the life cycle of materials and generate shared benefits for companies, communities and territories.
Within Eco-Industrial Parks, industrial synergies can also improve coordination among companies, park administrations and public institutions, strengthening governance and sustainable planning.
Capacity Building for Eco-Industrial Parks
This initiative reaffirms the commitment of PEI Peru, implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) with the support of Switzerland through its Economic Cooperation.
Institutional capacity building provides public officials, park managers and business stakeholders with the tools required to promote industrial symbiosis projects and accelerate the transformation of industrial parks.
These efforts also contribute to Sustainable Development Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, which promotes inclusive and sustainable industrialization, resilient infrastructure and innovation.
