Eco-Industrial Parks: an Integrated Vision for Sustainable Cities and Communities
Eco-Industrial Parks can play a role that goes beyond improving the environmental and productive performance of the companies operating within them. Their planning and management can also contribute to the sustainable development of the cities, communities, and territories where they are located.
Within the framework of SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, Carmen Julia García, National Coordinator of PEI Peru, highlighted the importance of understanding industrial parks as an active part of their urban and social environment, rather than as spaces that operate independently from the dynamics of the surrounding territory.

The Eco-Industrial Park as Part of Its Territory
The Eco-Industrial Park approach promotes a vision in which industrial activity maintains a closer relationship with the territory.
This means considering not only what happens within the park and among the companies located there, but also how its infrastructure, activities, and development opportunities interact with nearby communities and the urban environment in which it operates.
From this perspective, a sustainable industrial park should maintain dialogue with surrounding communities, create opportunities that extend beyond tenant companies, and plan its growth while taking into account the social and urban characteristics of its surroundings.
Beyond the Park’s Internal Operations
The transition towards an Eco-Industrial Park requires broadening the traditional view of industrial development.
In addition to areas such as resource efficiency, environmental management, and opportunities for collaboration among companies, the model also considers the relationship between the park and other stakeholders in the territory.
This integration makes it possible to understand the industrial park as a component of local development, capable of contributing to the strengthening of its surroundings and promoting a more balanced relationship between industry, cities, and communities.
Long-Term Planning
Every industrial park operates under different conditions. Its location, size, infrastructure, companies, nearby communities, and territorial characteristics determine the opportunities and challenges it must address.
For this reason, the transition towards more sustainable models requires solutions adapted to the reality of each organization.
According to the vision shared by PEI Peru, this long-term planning can help ensure that cities and territories grow in a more orderly, inclusive, and sustainable way.
Eco-Industrial Parks and SDG 11
SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities seeks to make cities and human settlements more inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.
In this context, Eco-Industrial Parks can become part of this transformation when their development incorporates the needs and characteristics of the surrounding territory.
Industrial sustainability therefore goes beyond the internal performance of companies and adopts a broader perspective in which industry, communities, and territories move forward in an integrated manner.
Through PEI Peru, implemented by UNIDO with the support of Switzerland through its Economic Cooperation, and with Peru’s Ministry of Production as the national focal point, this approach continues to be promoted to strengthen the sustainable development of industrial parks in the country.
