3rd International EIP and SIZ Peru Congress 2024, committed to industrial sustainability
Lima, November 21, 2024 – In downtown Lima, the Sheraton Hotel hosted the 3rd International Sustainable Industry Congress: EIP and SIZ, an event that brought together 250 participants from different sectors to discuss, share, and recognize progress in industrial sustainability.
Developed by UNIDO, in collaboration with the Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) and funded by the Swiss Economic Cooperation Programme (SECO) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the Congress reaffirmed its commitment to an inclusive and sustainable industrial future.
A meeting for industrial transformation
Under the theme “Towards a sustainable and inclusive industrial future,” the Congress served as a platform to showcase progress in the Eco-Industrial Parks (EIP) and Sustainable Industrial Zones (SIZ) projects in Peru. During the event, the transition toward an industrial model that prioritizes energy efficiency, the circular economy, and emissions reduction was highlighted—fundamental pillars in the fight against climate change.
The event began with an opening ceremony, where distinguished authorities welcomed participants, including Carolina González, UNIDO Representative for the Andean Region; Massimo Bloch, Director of the Swiss Economic Cooperation Programme (SECO); Hernán Zúñiga Carvajal, Director of Regulation at MINCIT; and María Ysabel Valle, Director of the SIZ Peru project, who emphasized the importance of international collaboration to achieve shared sustainability goals.

Presentations and highlights
The programme included high-impact presentations:
Presentation 1: “Progress and achievements of the Eco-Industrial Parks project in Peru”
Presented by Carmen Julia García, National Coordinator of UNIDO’s EIP and SIZ Peru Project. This presentation highlighted key results such as:
– Annual reduction of 13,104 MWh in energy consumption and 196,000 m³ of water.
– Financial savings of USD 1.5 million per year.
– Reduction of 4,865 tonnes of CO₂, equivalent to taking 473 vehicles off the road.
Presentation 2: “How do industrial parks and zones align with new trends in international industrial development and the environmental context?”
Presentation delivered by Prof. EM Heinz Leuenberger. The presentation highlighted how Eco-Industrial Parks are a key solution to increase resource efficiency, reduce waste, and promote the circular economy.
It also emphasized the need for clear policies and financial support for implementation.

Presentation 3: “New EU directive on the supply chain”
Presentation delivered by Dieter Mutz, who highlighted how international regulations are transforming industrial practices to align with global sustainability goals.
Presentation 4: “Green Finance”
Key to driving a sustainable future and mitigating the economic and social losses caused by climate change. Joel Sánchez explained how green finance promotes sustainability, debunking myths about its accessibility and profitability. He highlighted examples of sustainable projects financed by the IFC and strategies to mobilize financial resources such as green bonds and ESG-linked loans.

Moderated by Julio López (DEUMAN), with panelists such as Diana Águila (MINAM), Claudia Palomino, Deputy Sustainability Manager at Banco de Crédito del Perú, Marisela Vega, and Joel Sánchez Briseño (IFC). This session addressed strategies to finance sustainable projects and mitigate climate risks.
Presentation 5: “Achievements of the SIZ Peru Project”
The video shows the implementation of 43 clean technologies in 26 Peruvian companies and the direct impacts on reducing CO₂ emissions.
The SIZ Peru Project highlights progress in identifying industrial zones and establishing a sustainable regulatory framework, training 1,906 people and co-financing USD 1.44 million for 23 companies. It achieved a reduction of 4,614 tCO₂/year through technical improvements, promoting collective management that optimizes environmental, social, and economic performance. These efforts strengthen the country’s industrial sustainability.

Presentation 6: “The Colombian Experience”
Modernization of the regulatory framework to facilitate adoption of the EIP concept in Colombia outlines the regulatory development needed to implement EIPs, highlighting a legal framework aligned with public policies and solutions such as the Community of Practice. It includes the incorporation of EIPs into the National Development Plan and the strengthening of technical capacities to ensure a sustainable model.
Panel: “Progress in the Peruvian and Colombian regulatory frameworks for implementing Eco-Industrial Parks”
The policy panel reviewed progress in the regulatory frameworks in Peru and Colombia to promote Eco-Industrial Parks, highlighting challenges, regulatory advances, and the role of UNIDO and PRODUCE. With experts from MINCIT and PRODUCE, it emphasized public–private collaboration and technical capacity-building as pillars for sustainability.
Recognitions and Awards
The Congress celebrated the achievements of companies and industrial parks through two award galas.
ZIS Awards 2024
Trophies and co-financing were awarded to companies that successfully implemented the technologies, to companies that signed contracts to begin implementation, and to companies that will receive the co-financed amount.
EIP Awards
Awards were given to the six prioritized industrial parks: La Chutana, Sector 62, Indupark, Piura Futura, ZED Paita, and ZOFRATACNA.
Closing and Outlook
The event closing was led by Víctor Parra, who invited all attendees to continue working together for a more sustainable Peru. Participants enjoyed a closing cocktail reception, which provided a space to strengthen networks and discuss future collaborations.
