Communicating to transform: the role of communication in Eco-Industrial Parks

Communication is not the last step of sustainability: in Eco-Industrial Parks, it is a tool to turn results into trust, partnerships and transformation.

On the path towards an Eco-Industrial Park model, cutting emissions, optimising water and energy use, driving circular economy solutions or creating new forms of collaboration between companies are important steps forward. However, their true reach grows when we are able to translate those technical results into messages that people can understand, value and relate to their own surroundings.

Making the impact of transformation visible

From a communication perspective, this is precisely one of our main challenges: making the impact of industrial transformation visible and connecting it with companies, authorities, communities and other local stakeholders.

Communicating sustainability is not just about sharing figures, activities or achievements. It means explaining why those results matter, what changes they are bringing about and how they can help build a more efficient, competitive and responsible industry.

For example, lower water consumption is not only an environmental indicator. It can also mean more efficient management of a resource shared with the surrounding territory. Likewise, making use of waste can become a circular economy opportunity, create new relationships between companies and reduce environmental impacts.

Communication allows us to make those connections visible.

Building trust with the surrounding community

It also plays a fundamental role: building trust.

The relationship between industry and its surroundings should be based on clear information, transparency and dialogue. When an industrial park communicates its progress, challenges and commitments in an approachable way, it helps build a stronger relationship with communities and the different stakeholders around it.

Strategic communication in Eco-Industrial Parks: one message for each audience

To achieve this, it is important to understand that each audience needs a different approach. Companies may be interested in efficiency, innovation and competitiveness. Authorities, in how these processes contribute to the economic and sustainable development of the territory. Communities, in turn, need to know how industrial activities relate to their surroundings, their quality of life and local development opportunities.

That is why communication in Eco-Industrial Parks must be strategic. It involves identifying audiences, understanding their interests and building evidence-based messages, expressed in a simple, relevant and approachable way.

In my experience supporting the communication of Eco-Industrial Park initiatives in Peru and Colombia, I have seen that a well-designed strategy can do much more than showcase results. It can connect stakeholders who used to work separately, create new partnerships and help position this model as a concrete alternative for moving towards a more sustainable industry.

Sustainability and competitiveness can go hand in hand

It can also help change the way we understand industry.

For a long time, sustainability and competitiveness were presented as separate goals. Today we have the opportunity to show that they can move forward together. When a company reduces its consumption, optimises resources, makes use of waste or adopts more efficient solutions, it does not only improve its environmental performance: it can also strengthen its productivity and competitiveness.

Sharing these experiences makes it possible to show, with evidence, that industry can be part of the solution to the environmental, economic and social challenges of our territories.

Multiplying the impact

But perhaps one of the greatest values of communication is its ability to multiply impact.

When a good practice becomes visible, it can inspire other companies. When authorities understand the results, they can contribute to building and strengthening public policies. When communities know about the progress and commitments of industry, new opportunities for dialogue open up. And when different stakeholders find a common language, it becomes easier to build partnerships.

That is why communicating the path towards an Eco-Industrial Park model means much more than showcasing technical progress: it means showing how an industry can transform itself step by step and create value for companies, communities and the territory.

It also means turning technical information into accessible knowledge and creating spaces where different stakeholders can understand the value of moving towards more sustainable production models.

Because a result can be technically successful, but when it is also understood, shared and recognised, it has the potential to generate a much greater impact.

For me, this is one of the great contributions of communication on the path towards Eco-Industrial Parks: making transformation visible so that it can be understood, valued and multiplied.
